One Day That Sets the Tone for the Next 365

Just before we break for the holidays each year, Stryve has a post-it note party. We block off the day in our calendars. We get out of the office. No client calls, no meetings. The team heads to the private room of one of our favourite local restaurants where divergent thinking flows like wine (and so does the wine).

Every year, one big, inspiring question is posed to the team.

It gives our minds the opportunity to think much bigger than our daily to-do lists. It gives our team the opportunity to dream much bigger about the company we are building. It also gives everyone a chance to share their ideas, whether they have been a Stryve’r for 8 weeks or 8 years.

Last year we asked ourselves, “Wouldn’t it be cool if…”

We all thought about this question before the meeting and came prepared to jot down our ideas on post-it notes. There’s one rule: Whether it’s practical or pie-in-the-sky, every idea has a spot on the table.

Then, a couple cool things happened.

We noticed we had some very similar ideas. It showed how in-sync we are because of our ongoing Friday afternoon Team Talks. Tons of ideas were born on the fly, building off of what other team members wrote down. And, some of our most actionable ideas came from those pipe-dream ideas.

We had a purpose-driven year.

In last Friday’s Team Talk, we reflected on where last year’s post-it note party got us. We’re working for amazing clients. They’re the kind of clients we have always dreamed about working for. We grew our team and expanded our resources. We have better processes that improve the way we get shit done. We are continuing to carve out our own culture. And most importantly, we have clear direction on where we want to go.

Stryve is hiring a Copywriter and Content Producer (Part-time/Freelance)

“The first draft of anything is shit.”- Ernest Hemingway

Stryve is a digital agency specializing in B2B marketing. We’re a team of artists, techies and strategic thinkers who create digital experiences that drive sales for our clients. Our clients’ businesses are diverse, ranging from technology to law and higher education.

We’re looking for an amazing writer to join us to transform ideas into compelling content. The right candidate will be passionate about perfection and eager to work in a creative environment where skills are valued. He or she will be able to write in multiple tones and styles to fit different clients and media forms.

The successful candidate will start working with us part-time at our Kitchener office as early as this July. The time requirement will be two days a week, ideally Tuesday and Thursday, and up to 16 hours per week.

What you’d be getting yourself into

As a part-time copywriter and content producer at Stryve, you would be supporting an account team when it comes to:

  • Producing marketing copy for websites, digital ad campaigns and marketing assets such as explainer sheets or brochures
  • Researching topics and producing written content for blogs, whitepapers, and eBooks
  • Providing advice regarding clients’ content strategies
  • Providing proof reading and editing expertise
  • Contributing to Stryve’s thought leadership in digital marketing

What we’re hoping to find

Our future copywriter and content producer will come to us with…

  • A degree/diploma in journalism, PR, advertising, marketing, english or communications
  • Experience that speaks to your ability to hit deadlines and stay on task
  • A natural flair for writing that grabs attention
  • An ability to understand the client’s brand and write in that personality and tone
  • 2+ years of experience in copywriting or content production

And we’ll show him/her the ropes for everything else! That being said, it would be really nice (but certainly NOT required) to have some bonus skills in:

  • Staying up-to-date with technology and tech trends
  • Working in the B2B marketing world
  • Digital and content marketing

A lot of skills can be taught over time, but what isn’t easy to develop is a good cultural fit. Our tight-knit team needs to stay this way. You’d fit in well with our team if…

  • Your fifth food group is burritos and/or sushi
  • You’re always learning new things and sharing your knowledge
  • Humour is a part of how you get through the day
  • You’re confident in sharing your opinion
  • There are things outside of work that you are passionate about

Are you ready to apply?

Send us your resume, portfolio and cover letter through the form below. Please make sure you submit your application before 11:59 PM (EDT) on July 11th, 2016. If you have any technical difficulties, please contact us at knockknock(at)

Red Bull Stratos Jump follow-up: Dude survives — and breaks 5 records!

Confirming the predictions we posted last Friday, the Red Bull Stratos Jump has proven that jumping from the edge of space is still considerably less dangerous than sitting on a particularly unsteady bench.

In other impressive Stratos Jump news, Felix Baumgartner’s jump from 128,000 feet from earth broke not one, not two, not three or four, but FIVE official world records. Four of these records are scientific in nature:

  • first person to break the sound barrier in freefall,
  • highest vertical speed in freefall,
  • highest freefall parachute jump and,
  • greatest freefall distance.

Needless to say, we’re impressed.  However, (in our one-track-social-media-minds) the most important record broken was #5:  most concurrent views of a live stream on YouTube.

Red Bull dominated YouTube on Sunday, attracting over 8 million viewers to their channel to stream the jump live.  Since we checked last week, their subscriber base has sky-rocketed (no pun intended) from around 600,000 to 776,786!  What does this translate to for Red Bull?  Forbes has reported that Ben Sturner, President and CEO of Leverage Agency, has called the jump “perhaps the greatest marketing stunt of all time” and said that, “The value for Red Bull is in the tens of millions of dollars of global exposure, and Red Bull Stratos will continue to be talked about and passed along socially for a very long time.”

But I think I’ll still go for the particularly unsteady bench…
